The Samsung Galaxy S23 has a lot of things going for it, chiefly a dedicated telephoto lens that’s often MIA on other phones in this price range. But with the lower-cost Pixel 7a taking better photos on average and the rest of the S23 lineup offering more premium features, the Galaxy S23 FE struggles to define itself.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE finds itself in an odd position that’s unusual for most phones — it has to justify its own existence. Samsung is betting that while there are some features that are must-haves for certain phone users, others can be easily shed if it means saving a few bucks off the price of a more capable smartphone. Are features like a dedicated telephoto lens in a $599 device alluring enough to make people forget about the more powerful processor and more refined design of Samsung’s flagship phone?
One difference with the S23 FE is that the camera lens stick out a little more prominently from the back of the phone — it’s more like the design of the Galaxy A54 than the S23. That’s to accomodate the larger 6.4-inch display — the S23 keeps it compact at 6.1 inches — but it also means the S23 FE is harder to hold in smaller hands. In adaptive mode, your screen scales up to 120Hz when there’s lots of onscreen activity to smooth things out; otherwise, it sticks to a 60Hz rate. Watching Haunted Mansion on Disney+, the spooky scenes in the dark seemed a touch murkier than they appeared on other recent phones I’ve reviewed such as the Motorola Razr (2023). This photo of pumpkins at the local produce store shows that Galaxy S23 FE isn’t immune from a problem that a lot of Samsung phones have — it pumps up the color to the point where overexposure is a real risk. The Galaxy S23 FE’s tendency to pump up colors serves it well in some circumstances, like this photo of a super famoso burrito the size of a small child.
The pickled carrot and guacamole are brighter in the S23 FE shot, and I like how crispy the chimichangas look, even if they’re less blurred in the Pixel 7a photo. The contrast of light and darkness continues with a photo of a window display featuring Legos at a local toy store.
While the glare off the glass in the Galaxy S23 FE is more noticeable, the brighter coloring is much more eye-pleasing, allowing the different Lego models on display to really stand out. I kept the night mode off in this shot, as there was enough ambient lighting at dusk to capture a photo of a movie theater marquee.
Some would argue that the Pixel 7a doesn’t have as much over-exposure around the neon lights, and it’s definitely true that there’s less glare off the marquee listing the movies that are showing. The Galaxy S23 FE relies on a 10MP selfie cam to capture self-portraits, but it didn’t impress in this shot of me in front of a brick wall.
I look a lot healthier in the Pixel 7a photo, even if Google’s phone loses some of the details in the wrinkles underneath my eyes. You wouldn’t expect a phone powered by an older system-on-chip to keep pace with newer silicon, even if the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 remains a capable chip.
Still, when comparing the Galaxy S23 FE to phones that look like better values, you’ll see the benefits of even an older Snapdragon 8 series chipset. On Geekbench 6, the S23 FE turned in better single- and multi-core scores than either the Pixel 7a and its Tensor G2 chip or the Galaxy A54 and its Exynos 1380 silicon. I never experienced any stutters or delays when playing PUBG Mobile, and I could switch between apps on the Galaxy S23 FE with relative ease. If there’s one area that concerns me about the Galaxy S23 FE and its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, it involves the phone’s battery life.
I do know that when running other tests on the phone, including both benchmarking and playing some graphically intensive games, the battery indicator dipped significantly, but that’s not really a reflection of real-world use. It’s a generous update policy for an Android device, though Google stole some of its thunder when it extended support ot seven years with the Pixel 8 series. On that front, the Galaxy S23 FE delivers, as its cameras capture solid images, even in low light, though the Night mode in particular could use some fine tuning. The trouble is, midrange camera phones have gotten better, and while they may not have the dedicated zoom lens of the Galaxy S23 FE, they can hold their own in most other areas.
It tries to thread the needle between higher-end flagship phones and lower priced midrange models without fully convincing you that you’d be better off opting for either of those instead.

Samsung came up with a winner when it launched the Galaxy S20 FE back in 2020, offering a flagship-level experience at a cheaper price than its mainline flagship phones. Samsung’s FE models are typically cheaper than the base Galaxy S flagship, and this remains true. That means powerful (but one-year-old) silicon, a 120Hz OLED screen, a decently sized battery, and wireless charging. This should translate into solid image quality thanks to pixel-binning as well as more detail in daylight conditions.

Performance Those expecting the latest and greatest flagship silicon like the original Galaxy S20 FE might be a little disappointed here. The S23 FE sticks with either a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 chipset, depending on the region. This turn of events means that the Galaxy S23 FE will offer plenty of horsepower on paper, although it’s not quite on par with 2023’s flagship SoCs.
We also lamented the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Exynos 2200’s sustained performance, so we’ll need to put the S23 FE to the test to see whether these complaints still hold water. Expect a similar 6.4-inch display compared to previous phones, packing a 120Hz refresh rate as well. Expect rounded aluminum edges here, some sizeable bezels, and a glass back with individual rear camera cutouts.

So your phone should be able to survive a brief dunk just fine, provided it’s not salt water. Despite the use of this scratch-resistant coating, you might want to think about getting a Galaxy S23 FE case and screen protector to further protect the device. The phone will be available in Cream, Graphite, Mint, and Purple color schemes. If the speeds are anything like the Galaxy S21 FE then you should expect a full charge in about 90 minutes.
Like its more premium namesake, the Galaxy S23 FE does not come bundled with a charger in the box. We’re guessing the phone will be available via the likes of Samsung.com and Amazon in North America and Europe. We’ll update this section once we’ve received information in this regard. Of course, some things fall short of the higher-end S23 line, such as a slightly older processor and thicker bezels around the screen, but these are easily overlooked considering the FE costs $200 less than the next most affordable Galaxy S23. That said, the $699 Google Pixel 8 gives you a lot of the same features but with added offline capabilities and AI-powered image editing tools, earning it our Editors’ Choice for midrange Android phones. Samsung sent us the Purple model for testing, but the phone is also widely available in Cream, Graphite, or Mint. The FE’s screen size is in a sweet spot between the two at 6.4 inches with a resolution of 2,340 by 1,080 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz.
The SIM card tray is on the top edge, the volume rocker and power button are on the right, and the USB-C connector and speaker grille are on the bottom. The S23 FE is rated IP68 like the other S23 devices, which means it is dustproof and can survive being dunked in water up to five feet deep for up to 30 minutes.
The S23 FE reached 14,389 on the PCMark Work 3.0 test, which evaluates general mobile tasks. In real-world gaming, playing Genshin Impact on medium settings at 60fps worked quite well even though the S23 FE warned of a slowdown.
In our battery test, in which we stream an HD video from YouTube with the screen at full brightness, the Galaxy S23 FE lasted a little over 10 hours. Taking the S23 FE as far away as possible from the access point in my apartment saw speeds drop to 37.1Mbps down and 6.5Mbps up, while the Nothing Phone (2) reached 43.6Mbps down and 7.22Mbps up.
The bass response of the S23 FE’s stereo speakers is just alright when listening to our audio test track, The Knife’s “Silent Shout.” The earpiece speaker reached 84.8dB and the speakerphone hit 69.2dB, so calls were easy to hear even in a noisy room.
The 10MP front-facing camera produced test images with good detail while separating the subject from the background well in selfies. However, the S23 FE lacks the powerful AI image editing tools found on the Pixel 8, which are definitely important if you’re looking to perfect your photos without having to fire up Photoshop. Running in place created just a slight bounce in the finished video, but it remained steady and watchable.
Samsung’s support of its Android devices was the best policy on the market until Google announced its seven-year commitment to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. However, Samsung lets you save your app pairs to an Edge Panel (which is a hidden taskbar), so you can always launch that duo together. If you want your S23 FE to act like a traditional computer, you can connect it to a display (wired or wirelessly) as well as a keyboard and mouse. Dex mode gives you a familiar open desktop that lets you access Android apps and place them in resizable windows. Though it costs $100 more, the Pixel 8 manages to edge it out thanks to its superior imaging prowess and Google’s industry-leading seven-year software commitment.
The S23 FE is a close second, however, and has some appealing features you won’t find on the Pixel 8 like a dedicated telephoto camera, a bigger screen, and the ability to use it like a computer via Samsung’s Dex mode. So if productivity is more important to you than camera tricks, you won’t find a better $599 phone than the Galaxy S23 FE.
