The $999 Android-powered smartphone has plenty to offer for that price, including a 6.7-inch display that folds in half, shrinking down the entire footprint of the phone. I have a Galaxy Z Fold 3 of my own and have thoroughly enjoyed using it over the last year, thanks to the large tablet-like display when it’s opened.

I’ve always thought, however, that the Z Flip 4’s design made more sense because when the phone is opened up, it reveals a 6.7-inch display that looks and works like a traditional smartphone. When you start using two apps in split-screen mode, however, the display can begin to feel a bit cramped. It’s entirely possible to have Chrome open on the top half and Gmail on the bottom in order to look something up and share it, but you won’t want to do it all the time. On the flip side (sorry, couldn’t help it), when the Flip 4 is closed, you can quickly view notifications and quickly reply to messages with predefined messages, pause or skip tracks and make mobile payments with Samsung Wallet using the 1.9-inch Cover screen.

You can even launch the camera app from the cover display by double-pressing the fingerprint sensor and use the screen on the front of the phone as a viewfinder to take selfies. Even though the Flip 4 doubles in thickness when it’s closed, the phone takes up much less space in your pocket and is much more comfortable than a more traditional smartphone to carry around.

While that score isn’t as long as the OnePlus 10 Pro’s 18 hours and 46 minutes, it’s on par with the Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra, both of which have larger-capacity batteries. From opening games to quickly switching between the likes of Slack and Twitter while playing a YouTube video in picture-in-picture mode, I never noticed any slowdowns. However, the iPhone 13 Pro Max and its A15 Bionic processor still delivered significantly faster benchmark speeds than Samsung’s phones, scoring 1,739 and 4,675 on single- and multi-core performance, respectively. The rear cameras are reliable in that once you get used to their slightly oversaturated images (which is typical of a Samsung phone), you will have plenty of confidence that the Z Flip 4 will capture the shot you want.

However, portrait mode is accurate in detecting a subject and adding the fake blur effect that creates depth. There are some photos where a brightly lit background through the trees is blown out, showing only white in place of what should be a building or sunlight. I previously mentioned how much you can get done on the Cover screen without opening the Z Flip 4 to reveal the main display inside. You wake the Cover screen with a quick double tap on the display to check the time, date and battery level of the Z Flip 4. Swiping down on the Cover screen reveals quick settings shortcuts for things like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or your phone’s flashlight. If you swipe in from the right edge of the screen you’ll scroll through various widgets that show you the weather and allow you to control music playback, check alarms and set times.

Third-party developers can’t create a widget to display, say, current sports scores, or maybe view the last snapshot taken on a home security camera or pet cam. Other times, the display reacted exactly how you’d expect it to — opening a link or scrolling through a long email.

The $999 price tag is steep for a smartphone, but it’s a steal compared to the $1,799 Z Fold 4, a phone that’s better suited for someone who does a lot of multitasking and needs a device that works more like a tablet or laptop.

If you’re looking to break away from the smartphone norm with a solid slab of glass, the Z Flip 4’s performance, battery life and reliable camera setup — all wrapped up in a compact foldable design — is worth the cost.

Galaxy Z Flip 4 Review: Pure Fun, but More of the Same

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 is the most portable and fun phone I’ve tested this year. You can fold its slender, high refresh-rate, 6.7-inch screen in half, turning it into something the size of a drink coaster that easily fits in most pockets. Most of that price is because it can fold in half, but it also packs one of the most powerful and efficient processors found in any Samsung phone.

Nearly everything about the Flip 4 feels fun and approachable, from its petite, squared-off footprint when it’s closed to the fact that you can choose your own “bespoke” color scheme for it.

But the same can be said about last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 3, which Samsung continues to sell at a discounted price. While I appreciated all of the upgrades large and small, Samsung could still go further, especially in terms of extending the battery life and improving the camera quality.

Still, the Galaxy Z Flip won’t be truly ready for the masses until it can reliably get through a long day on a single charge. It’s also worth a mention that, even though the phone costs $1,000, Samsung and wireless carriers have been heavily subsidizing the price, making it a bit more palatable for those who really want one. There’s just a minute layer that separates your finger from the high refresh rate screen, and it feels like there is nothing between your fingertips and the internet — or you and your photos. It takes a little time to get used to, but after a day or so I was able to flick it open one-handed, Captain Kirk style.

To be clear, I don’t need to play Call of Duty on the Flip 4’s cover display. Then there’s Flex Mode, which triggers software to change when the Flip 4 is positioned halfway open.

Flex Mode on previous Flips and Folds awkwardly moved the photo to the middle. Usually that means the app moves to the top half and Samsung’s default Flex Mode interface is on the bottom. You can click buttons and open menus with the world’s tiniest cursor, or use two fingers to swipe and move around like exploring street view in Google Maps. The Flip 4 doesn’t have a dedicated telephoto camera, and that means you rely entirely on digital zoom, which is where the image starts to fall apart. I dig the way the Flip 4 captured this old VW bug, especially the subtle differences in the car’s blue and the sky. I was able to grab a video of my cat playing at her eye level and capture some snazzy shots of a pan of cooking gnocchi because the Flip 4 is its own tripod. And one small upgrade with mighty ramifications is that the cover display can now show a full preview of either portrait or landscape photos and videos. Previous Flips severely cropped the camera preview on the cover display making it a challenge to frame group selfies. The new preview functionality and the ability to trigger the camera shutter by holding your hand up means the Flip 4 could be one of the best creative tools for capturing social media content. The Flip 4’s better battery life makes it less of a compromise for someone coming from a nonfolding phone.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 are the most powerful phones Samsung currently sells. Over 45 minutes with the screen at full brightness, I watched a couple of YouTube videos, scrolled my Instagram feed, played a bout of PUBG Mobile, then raced a circuit in Mario Kart Tour, took a 5-minute video call via Zoom and, lastly, played Alto’s Odyssey. You get a more robust build with water resistance, a bigger battery, a larger cover screen, a faster and more efficient processor and a high-refresh-rate main display. While the Flip 4 has a faster processor, the Galaxy S22’s battery lasts longer on a single charge.

At the end of the day, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a delightful reminder that an innovative design that balances form, function and fun goes a long way. And while all the upgrades are a step in the right direction, the Flip 4 still comes up short at basics like battery life and photography.

So, we’ve got a slightly older, power-user smartphone versus a newer, mainstream-focused handset. Now, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the closest thing you can get to a true Note successor, but is it worth buying? Both are glass sandwich slabs with thin bezels, aluminum rails framing the displays, ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanners, IP68 water and dust resistance, and center-aligned punch holes. There’s no denying that the Galaxy Note 10 Plus’ mammoth Quad HD+ Dynamic AMOLED panel is stunning, and one of the best displays ever found on a smartphone. The 120Hz display of the S20 Plus is nearly identical to the Note 10 Plus in terms of size and resolution, but has double the refresh rate. This translates to a fresher and snappier device that feels worlds newer than the 60Hz refresh rate found in the Galaxy Note 10 Plus. Day-to-day, this upgrade is going to be an obvious one that crucially affects how the device feels.

This does come at a price, however, as by running your Galaxy S20 Plus at 120Hz, you will experience a significant hit to battery life compared to keeping it in the 60Hz mode. In the Geekbench 4 benchmark, both the Exynos and Snapdragon-powered S20 Plus handily gain leads over their Note 10 Plus counterparts. In that case, a phone deemed overkill now can mean longer-lasting performance. This isn’t super well-known, but the Exynos 5G variant of the Galaxy S20 actually offers more RAM options. If you’re someone who can’t live without the S Pen, the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G is a no-brainer, with its massive display, executive-style design, faster charging, and still-impressive set of specs. However, if you want the latest specs in more mainstream housing, the S20 Plus 5G ticks a lot of boxes. You’re getting newer and more versatile cameras, a much faster and fresher-feeling 120Hz display, and some of the best build quality in the game. Buy the Galaxy S20 Plus 5G if the most important things to you are perceived speed and cameras.
