Not to be outdone, Samsung responded with a stunner of its own, the Galaxy S23, launched in February 2023 and priced at ₹79,999. Both have flat backplates but the S23 opts for a triple camera set up versus iPhone’s dual. The Galaxy S23 offers a more versatile camera setup with 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP telephoto lenses.
Both deliver great images, but for video, the iPhone 14 shines with more stable and balanced footage.
Both phones come with stereo speakers, but the S23 edges ahead with a wider soundstage and slightly more bass. The S23 excels in design, display, and audio, while the iPhone 14 leads in battery life and video recording.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra review: the best Android phone yet
Don’t get caught up in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s admittedly high price tag; instead, think about the value it represents. I (Andy Boxall) revisited the Galaxy S23 Ultra at the end of November 2023 and updated our review accordingly, plus added a new section right below covering how it operates today. The prompt update to Android 14 and One UI 6 definitely helps, as does the fact the S Pen and the brilliant, fun 10x optical zoom continue to be unique in the market. Over the past months, we’ve shown how the camera can take incredible photos in the right hands and how much difference there is between it and a $450 phone like the Samsung Galaxy A54.
Returning to it only emphasized that it has lost none of its camera magic, not even when compared to the latest Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. The camera isn’t perfect, but it’s so versatile and capable in most environments you’ll quickly forgive it should it get something wrong.
If you’re coming from a phone that isn’t nearly 9mm thick, 78mm wide, and 233 grams in weight, you’re really going to notice how much of a handful the S23 Ultra is. You will get used to the S23 Ultra’s size and weight, but if you’ve got small hands, the width and thickness make singlehanded use very difficult, which is far harder to overcome.
It’s still that familiar all-business look, with curved sides to the chassis and the screen, tiny bezels, and five circular camera modules on the back.
The S23 Ultra has an IP68 water-resistance rating, Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and Samsung’s latest Armor Aluminum chassis material. The weight means putting it in a case will protect it in the event of a fall onto something hard, but there’s a degree of reassurance that comes from Samsung’s commitment to durability that’s missing from many of its competitors. This also applies to Samsung’s use of recycled materials, and its lengthy software update commitment, which, when combined with the durability and performance of the phone, adds up to it being a device you’ll be happy to keep for years.
The standard Phantom Black, Lavender, Cream, and Green models are widely available, but if you order directly from Samsung you can choose one of four exclusive colors. Green is an on-trend color for smartphones, with everything from the iPhone 13 Pro to the OnePlus 11 tackling the tricky shade.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s telephoto cameras take photos that are impossible to replicate on any other smartphone, at least with the same quality. Most of the time, the colors are amped up by just the right amount, but it can slip into oversaturation when faced with reds and blues in some situations.
It takes considerably brighter photos than the iPhone 14 Pro and exposes more detail in the shadows too, but this comes at the expense of a natural color palette. It also tied with the much newer Apple iPhone 15 Pro’s camera in this test, showing it hasn’t lost any of its ability since launch. Pay through the app, and Lightroom Premium costs $5 per month, and it comes with an extended two-month free trial. The Lightroom for Samsung app adds a great deal to the overall camera experience, and retains that all-important hands-on approach to editing images that’s disappearing due to the use of AI.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s versatility makes it really desirable, and I feel confident I will be able to take any photo I want with it — and that’s something other phones can’t quite provide.
I continue to adore the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera for stills; it’s so incredibly versatile that I rarely feel it can’t capture the shot I want.
To find out, I took the phone with me on a short trip away and made a point to shoot as much video as possible, instead of mostly taking still photos as usual. I play games, use apps, make calls, use Bluetooth and Samsung DeX, take 200-megapixel photos, and shoot some 8K video.
Playing Asphalt 9: Legends for 30 minutes doesn’t cause any noticeable temperature increase apart from a tiny bit around the top edge, but nothing that you’d call hot, or even that warm. Recording a 15-minute Hyperlapse video caused the phone to heat up more around the camera module –not so it was burning, but definitely hot to the touch.
Apps start and refresh in seconds, and even Google Maps grabs a signal and loads the local area faster than other phones I’ve used. This time, Samsung hasn’t made an Exynos version of the Galaxy S23 Ultra for global markets. Buy the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and be safe in the knowledge you’ll have to work pretty hard to reach its limits. Peak brightness is 1,750 nits, and even walking around Manhattan on a (surprisingly) sunny February morning, Section Editor Joe Maring could still see the screen perfectly.
I love the wide viewing angle too, so even when the phone is flat on a desk, video still looks excellent and just like you’re watching it straight-on. When playing games, though, your palm does tend to cover the lower speaker unless you hold the phone “upside down” when the buttons get in the way and are less natural to press.
For example, did you know you can change the lock screen clock, notification layout, and add filters to the wallpaper? Samsung’s DeX system is a good example, as the phone can be connected to a monitor or PC to provide a big-screen PC-like experience.
It’s another crucial aspect of the device’s longevity, and a reason to buy and keep using your phone for years to come. I’d put it up against Android on the Pixel 7 in terms of speed, and although it’s not quite as simple to use as Google’s version, it’s more intuitive and fun than OxygenOS 13 on the OnePlus 11.
It’s securely held in place, and the tiny internal battery powering the Bluetooth is charged while it’s docked, ensuring it’s always ready to go. There’s no question it’s well-engineered and is more versatile than a passive stylus, but whether you use it regularly or not depends on your eagerness to take handwritten notes or sketch on your phone.
Once it is fully charged, it’s capable of lasting for more than two days with moderate use, and a lot of its ability comes from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s increased efficiency.
On a day with over an hour of playing Marvel Snap and browsing Twitter, then watching YouTube videos for 45 minutes, plus regular use of Google Chrome, Reddit, Duolingo, and more, the S23 Ultra ended a nearly 16-hour day with 5 hours and 20 minutes of screen-on time and 24% battery still remaining. The price puts it in competition with the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung’s own Galaxy Z Fold 5. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is so powerful and has such a versatile camera, mega battery life, impressive durability, and long-term software support that it will likely outlast many other devices, purely because of its outright ability.
There’s a real pleasure in using a phone that puts ability ahead of gimmicks and keeps a sensible, yet stylish and recognizable design over needlessly changing it up to try and attract buyers. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is Samsung at its most confident, and it’s the sensible, mature buying decision for anyone wanting the pinnacle of Android performance and ability.
It’s the current big thing, and because it’s not advancing the fundamentals over what we’re used to seeing already, it’ll stay relevant and usable for more people over many years. You’re going to pay a lot of money for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it’s worth every penny, and in three or even four years’ time, when it’s still a great phone, you’ll look back and see what good value it actually was.

Only way I’m upgrading any time soon is if the food gets a built in spending, until then I’m sticking to the ultra units. Ever since I purchased this camera back in February of this year, it has allowed me to take my photography skills, to a level of euphoric creativity, the boundless, endless, Limitless creative control that the camera allows me to have is simply stupendous. I was heartbroken to hear that Samsung stops to make Note model. It shows me to also zoom in to an exact spot that needs repaired so I can highlight and send off to maintenance wherever they are in the building so they get the right part to us quickly when possible. I do a lot of reports also that require my actual signature for both work and home and the S-Pen is the biggest life savor.
I am able at work to scan in documents and have associates fill out their portion without having to take a laptop every where I go. Even using the wifi calling feature at work I’ve never been able to get good reception, this phone however doesn’t seem to have any hiccups in that area.
From calling over wifi, regular service, to streaming I have yet to find any issues with the device. The clarity of the speakers and the vibrance of the screen while watching videos is outstanding.

As someone who loves watching videos in 4k, the screen on this device is a true marvel. The colors pop out of the screen, creating a breathtaking visual experience.
The high refresh rate adds another layer of brilliance, making everything buttery smooth.
Using it to doodle, draw, take notes, and even edit screenshots is a game-changer. The S Pen transforms this phone into a versatile creative tool that goes beyond the capabilities of a regular smartphone Date published: 2023-08-21T00:00:00-04:00 byfrom I’m already planning to switch to Fold but still debating just because I might not get the same camera quality as S23 Ultra.
Also I play several games that require the system to be fast and I very rarely have issues. The size is nice and allows me to edit excel, pdfs, PowerPoint, or Word documents with ease. The added s Pen also allows for a high level of Fidelity when making edits and trying to pinpoint certain points in a document. The battery life is exceptional and allows me to use my device heavily throughout the entire day.
Knowing the use case I was going to put this phone through, I also opted for the 512GB model, to ensure I wouldn’t run out of space when in a pinch. It allows for part of the hard storage to be utilized as RAM, which I opt in for. The difference between this camera set up vs my old Pixel 6 Pro is a huge upgrade. I can zoom up to 30x with the telescopic lens and shoot fireworks videos in stunning 8k.
My service could be better, but I fault T Mobile on that front as opposed to the phone itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Blackboyaco from Best phone ever We use for business purpose and our expectations were xceeded Date published: 2023-08-21T00:00:00-04:00 byfrom Highly likely you won’t even take advantage of all the perks of this phone because it’s that many. The zoom is great to use to see thing far away you can’t see with the naked eye. The camera overall is impressive as a just point and shoot but then you also have the expert raw mode that can import straight to Adobe lightroom. Only thing I can really think that is a downfall is the fact they decided to get rid of expandable memory.
Speaking of the OS, I like how Samsung has cut back on the thick skin over top of android. If you are in an accident you may break your leg but your phone will probably survive. Rated 5 out of 5 by Lpolanco from The best of all time Hi, I’m an engineer, and what I love the most is the camera, it’s great, there is nothing better on the market, simply this phone is the best of the best.

This is the best samsung device ive ever owned hands down Date published: 2023-08-21T00:00:00-04:00 byfrom This phone, even after countless hours of multitasking, gaming, and doodling, has yet to even make an dent in this battery over time. The processing unit housed within the phone ensures an efficient and seamless experience across the entire device for several hours on end.
Another feature which has surprised me as a new Ultra user is the ingenious functionalities of the S-Pen. Not only does it make jotting down lecture notes easier, or sign signatures more precisely and quickly, it allows several other functions with the button located on the side of the S-Pen. As an avid camper and part-time astrophotographer, I often find myself in nature filled landscapes as far as the eye can see, and dark night time situations. Simply put, the night mode and astrophotography capabilites on these cameras is phenomenal. The night sky is bedazzled with stars and the moon looks as if its being viewed through a telescope when you simply point your phone up and let the cameras do the work. Gaming streaming… Capturing images and videos all the features are spectacular.
I like the note pen and love to write color doing fun as notebook. I have the tablet, lap top, ear buds, watch and phone.

But, my complaint is that now, for at least the past 3-6 months, the battery doesn’t hold a charge. I even keep my phone in power saving mode 24/7 now, and it still won’t make it all day without a recharge. I can detach my pen and basically tell my phone to do a lot of functions like take a picture or either talk to Bixby.
And the most newest feature I also like is tapping to share with also other Galaxy member users.

I really had no reason to upgrade, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra had some features that couldn’t pass up on. The next and final thing that changed my mind was the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8th Gen 2 chipset.
I use my phone for everything from calls, texts, emails, photos, schedules, research, printing and whatever else wonderfully useful options may appear that I am not aware of as I go! Has an amazing camera with great features and a big enough screen to do any editing. Allows me to search online quick and have multiple tabs open to multitask. I use my S23 Ultra for streaming, movies, reading, navigating, photography, communications, work, banking and for fun! Photos are crisp and crystal clear- I can zoom to infinity and it’s never pixelated which I love!
I find with everything going on I need to be able to write things down quickly, sketch the big ideas… annotate images, graphs and drawings and the s-pen stylus allows me to do this seamlessly before I forget. I can quickly pay a bill as soon as I remember to do so and then switch over to Google maps to navigate a new area that I’m exploring or trying to find. While on my commute, I can read books on the kindle app easily due to the large screen size and listen to music on YouTube with my Galaxy Buds live. If I start to power walk, my S watch automatically picks up my increased activity and everything syncs to my S23 Ultra.
If I’m in a location where it’s not so safe to have my device out, I can take a call or control the phone from my watch. Battery lasts forever even with my excessive usage and with the large memory capacity, there are no glitches, no crashes. With the S23 Ultra, I have peace of mind- the same functionality and productivity I had from my last note, but on steroids! Rated 5 out of 5 by Emilee from It’s glitchy with high use I use the phone a lot and it glitches now.
You can capture those moments effortlessly and have memories that will last a life time. The future The Samsung s23 ultra is incredible with it’s mind blowing features such as A capability of high voltage charging it gives you freedom to use your phone all day It also has a great screen on which you will feel great experience of movies and videos There’s no need to have a great camera because of the greatest cameras of Samsung s23 ultra Not everyone can be a good photographer, however by using this phone, you can be a good camera man.
It can be used for work without any issues and the camera is top noch for taking photos and video. Definitely might want to buy a protective case for it and they are a bit fragile almost but my galaxy note10+ ultra lasted more than 4 years and still going. I used my phone for business, I make estimates and contracts which are easy to get signed for using the stylus.
I wish it was not so expensive and don’t really care for the curved screen but all in all it’s a great phone.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Srichard1022 from Solid device overall I use my s23 ultra for school and watching\playing games and it runs almost flawlessly, for a high end phone it does everything I need it to do plus some. The cameras are amazing and take some absolutely stunning pictures and with the photo remaster option can churn out some beautiful results.
The only “problems” ive had is it randomly will close apps sometimes and the phone takes forever to turn on from a full shutdown but those are both minor issues. The speed on this thing is awesome The quality of the icons and home screen amazing. All in all great phone can’t wait for the next one Date published: 2023-08-21T00:00:00-04:00 byfrom

Rated 5 out of 5 by Kechinu from Call system Great picture but lately, the phone is not chargin over 85% for a reason I don’t know. I use my s23 ultra, for everything such as for watching content, buying stuff, doing my banking, keeping in touch with my kids, video calling my granddaughter, playing games, using it for my work schedule, taking pictures, and video ing. Texting, getting sport scores, setting reminders, doctors appointments, and much more.

I needed a phone that had a volume control that would be high enough for me do to the fact I have a hearing impairment. The down side was not being told when I bought the phone it did not come with a charging block.
I’m glad Samsung is competing seriously in the smartphone market; this phone is a joy to behold! A little of heavy but that’s due to the awesome battery that lasts longer than any phone I’ve ever had.
I just added a Galaxy 4 Classic watch and find it makes the phone even better. I purchased this from Samsung, switching from an Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max.
I did not realize how great your phones were in addition to your televisions and Galaxy ear buds. It’s a very heavy phone, the camera is so -so for pictures, the video quality is terrible.
Lots of glitches as well, Bluetooth problem, Android Auto problems, and issues with the screen shutting off very quickly, and lastly the phone charges very slowly. Rated 5 out of 5 by pattib from Nice, but improve finger print sensor for biometic Overall I am happy with this phone. Please improve this — My previous phone was not a Samsung, and I disliked almost everything about it, but the biometric fingerprint was so much better, just a touch to the power button and it worked every time. Does not have a head phone port and if you have a older car so no blue tooth only AUX forget playing or talking hands free.

It just doesn’t out pace the apple iPhone pro max it completely crushes it in every way! Speed, performance, camera, usability and with a solid case and a nano screen protector, durability! I love this phone and Samsung so much the two have literally saved me from complete ruin. I upgraded from the s21 ultra and I’m not going to lie I really don’t see too much difference as they were running the same android version and UI.
I always hear people saying I should’ve bought an iPhone but they are so clueless as to what they, in their ignorance are missing out on. It is also not an environmentally friendly feature because anyway you will still have to buy a charger, so you just have to spend more money than the phone cost. Rated 5 out of 5 by CSC Guy from Honestly…Not Impressed You would think after going from a 6 year old (working great Note 9) to the “top of the line brand new” S23 Ultra would be amazing. It’s slightly “faster”, but the battery doesn’t last 1/3rd as long, much more overly complicated foe the sheer sake of being “upgraded” and it spends more time LOOKING for 5G than anything else. The phone itself is amazing, beautiful and elegant, it operates smoothly and can help increase efficiency while working with multiple applications. The only issues being with the spotty Bluetooth and S-pen connection otherwise easily a 5 or above star phone.

My phone, however, has been plagued with issues since the first time I powered it up, namely, Safe Lock and the display dimming on it’s own. I’ve done 2 factory data resets on it, spent hours on the phone with Samsung tech support, took it in to a Samsung authorized repair center, they completely wiped the phone, both firmware and software, and completely reinstalled the operating system from the ground up to no avail.
Why Samsung cut back on RAM with the S23 Ultra is still a mystery to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Observant Shopper from Seems incomplete for the price I reluctantly bought this phone to replace my fold 3 after the inner screen protector failed yet again and the hinge wouldn’t allow it to open all the way. For what this phone costs the screen is too small, there is no 3.5mm audio jack, no IR blaster and the charge rate, both wired and wireless, pales compared to other android offerings in the same price range. Samsung give us 100 watt plus charging rates and bring back the microsd card slot for additional storage. The battery seems to last a long time, much better than my fold 3 ever did which is good since it charges so slow.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Jimmy from Almost perfect but with a flaw I just got a graphite one, but seriously Samsung, for a $1,200+ phone we expect perfection-I am returning mine because I had a defect on the bottom right of the screen that is happening with many models worldwide. Phone is fast, pictures are excellent (especially the night vision option). I’ve been running my S23 Ultra for about a month now and it is the biggest upgrade I’ve ever seen between phones only two years apart. I love the S Pen and it made me remember how much I liked being able to handwrite notes on my devices. Rated 5 out of 5 by Ckjr from Perfect gadget This phone never disappoints me its the top of the line.
Rated 5 out of 5 by DonT from null I bought this a month ago and want to give it back…always with the ‘ connected without internet ‘. There is no enjoyment..most of the time I give up on waiting to reach a particular site because of this connectivity issue.
I already know it has been affecting other buyers of this phone so why is it taking so long to come up with a fix for it. A few weeks into my S23 Ultra 512GB Green and yeah it’s a decent phone and should be for $1500 with tax.
The 200 mega pixel camera is just a smoke show the real improvement is the stabilizer. Camera is great, live the RAW and night sky features.
I love the phone regardless… just gonna wrap it into a black case anyway. Unlocking the phone is hard with one hand since the sensor is on the screen. unlike the note 9 where the sensor was on the back of the phone and 100 times better and I never needed to look where im placing my finger to unlock it. The whole sensor unlocking thing is a absolute game changer for me and will reverting back to my note 9 in a few weeks.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Maury from Let down a bit….. For some reason it’s sluggish on multiple occasions. I’ve had the sim card replaced recently, did a factory reset prior and post sim replacement and I have about 80% of storage with no apps running in the background (because I make sure to stop those when I’m not doing anything) and nothing seems to help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by GarysGeeksGuru from Amazing performance It does get exceedingly hot and I’m not sure why it could be because it does extra bright could be because if you open more than one app but I still rate this five out of five the performance of the phone is amazing it does not lag no matter what game I put on it including emulated games which would stress the CPU and it does not the DUI is friendly I am using Android 14 UI 6.0 beta 3 no issues with the operating system other than Google Wallet won’t work unless the operating system is official no problem it should be official soon meanwhile my process my wallet default as Samsung pay or Samsung wallet but that is not an issue as far as GPU CPU performance amazing phenomenal like I said it gets very hot it can burn you actually burn you if you touch it holding it almost impossible against your skin it could burn that is a concern but the 120 HZ refresh rate the color the brightness by far the best phone I have ever had I wondered if it was a good enough upgrade from my Note 20 Ultra and while they do appear to be very similar it was worth the upgrade it is a significant Improvement in performance over the note 20 Ultra the 208 megapixel camera is phenomenal the clarity the night vision amazing this phone was more than I expected it to be a better battery longer lasting I have $1,538 games install I can run 10 of them at once no problem of course that would heat up any CPU I’m working on how to decrease the temperature if I remove features like extra bright if I reduce the brightness level if I have less apps running in the background the temperature is tolerable but after a period of time and being on it’s steadily increases it is a moderate concern but the performance of this phone is beyond comparison and has earned the five star rating from a technical standpoint I am pleased with Samsung’s innovation and Technology advances that are represented in this new s23 Ultra the S Pen also has no lag and no skip writes like a real ballpoint pen far better than the note 20 Ultra I like the mirror back of the note 20 Ultra but would often slip out of my hands without a case that is not the situation with the s23 ultra the new back insures it will not slip one of the largest screen sizes at 6.8 and more impressive it’s the screen to body ratio nearly zero body I would rate it 98 9% screen and 1.1% body the display is beautiful full range of colors very pleasing to the eye very Vivid and again the refresh rate allows for multitasking animation without lag and impressive phone and if you have not yet experienced it you are truly missing out a must buy we have purchased two of these phones as well as Samsung buds 2 Pro along with the Samsung Galaxy 6 watch the combination of the three allows us to truly enjoy Samsungs Innovative technology with so many features to explore it could take months to explore them all and with the promise of a four-year update we are excited and take comfort knowing we have invested in a long term capable device that will provide years of pleasure thank you Samsung for providing us technology ahead of our time Date published: 2023-09-19T00:00:00-04:00 byfrom

The camera quality and the customization to my personality makes this phone a definite must have! Rated 5 out of 5 by Riad from Fantastic Phone I traded in my iPhone 8+ for a galaxy s20 ultra and it was great.
Now, I have even more amazing battery life, a better camera, a better processor, and crystal clear reception. Called customer service on the phone for an hour and was transferred 7 times with no resolution.
Just snapped a pic driving through Manhattanthe other night which shows the great low light detail.
